Following directions & controlling the employment process!

by CareerMVP.com

Applicants are often given bad advice. One bad piece of advice is to control or be aggressive during the interview or employment process. Just remember that the company is going to think however you act in the recruitment process is how you will act as an employee. So if you are unprofessional, too aggressive and unable to follow directions as an applicant, you will not do it as an employee either.

Don't be too aggressive!
Do you like aggressive salespeople who call you too much or pressure you to buy? In a sense, the employer is your customer and you are a salesperson and the product. So if you don't like to be pressured, why do you think the employer would? Recruiters, company management and HR professionals are busy people. They will likely give you a good idea of when to call or when they will call. If they tell you they are tied up for the next two weeks in budgeting or sales meetings, it may not be a good idea to bother them. But, this is your judgement call.

Do some companies like aggressive?
Sure. This is because they want people who are aggressive on the job, especially if it is sales. So, if you want to be an aggressive salesperson, be aggressive in the interview. Also, extremely high-end jobs may require someone who goes after what they want. If you are at that level, you are capable of handling that situation without us.

Follow Directions & Respect the Process
The employer or recruiter has set-up a process that helps them efficiently collect and review information. It's hard to believe that applicants, who are searching for a job, are arrogant enough to criticize the process. But, every employer and recruiter hears complaints at some point in time. The applicants who complain of course never get the job. Actually, this is a great way to weed out applicants who will cause problems as employees.

If they say they want you to mail the resume, then do it. Don't be critical of the process. It doesn't mean they are technologically behind the times. It means they have their reasons for wanting a hard copy. If they don't want email attachments, don't attach anything. Follow the directions to the letter no matter how trivial it may seem. What seems trivial to you might be really important to the interviewer. Some of the directions may also be simply to test you to see how well you pay attention and follow directions.

Again, consider the employer to be your customer. The customer is always right. Let them determine the process.
